UK: PhD Studentships Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy

Applications are invited from graduates in physics or medical physics for two PhD Studentships in the Sir Peter Mansfield Magnetic Resonance Centre within Nottingham University’s School of Physics and Astronomy. Sir Peter Mansfield jointly won the 2003 Nobel Prize for his contribution to the invention of MRI. The SPMMRC houses the UK’s highest field (7 Tesla) body scanner as well as two 3 T scanners and spectrometer systems. This group develops techniques and hardware for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS), particularly echo-planar imaging (EPI). It also works on the applications of these techniques, for example, in the areas of neuroscience, cancer and functional imaging. The focus of these studentships will be to develop novel MR techniques which can be applied to a wide range of medical research areas.

Students should ideally have a background in physics or related subject (medical physics, bio-engineering, computer science or mathematics) and have a high class UK honours degree, or equivalent. An MSc in these subjects will be particularly welcome.

The studentships provide tuition fees, plus a maintenance allowance. Due to funding restrictions, the Medical Research Council studentship is only available to UK students, as defined by UK research councils. The second studentship is available to both UK and EU nationals.
